To celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago today, world-famous rock group U2 held a free concert at the Brandenburg Gate. Free, in this case, means that the tickets were free of charge, not that anyone could go and see the aforementioned concert. In fact, in a case of what I certainly hope is unintentional irony, MTV (the producer of said concert) erected a large temporary wall around the venue itself, complete with white tarp to block any non-ticket-holding spectators from viewing the concert.

So let me get this straight: holding a free concert to celebrate the tearing down of a wall means that the producer must put up a wall around said concert. Well hello irony.

With the release of J.C. Hutchins’s novel “7th Son: Descent,” the Pio is partnering with several other blogs and content authors to release a 100-page, Special Edition PDF excerpt of the book, but we’re doing it with a twist.

From today until Thursday Nov. 6, I’ll be taking submissions of reviews of the 100-page PDF. The best three reviews (as chosen by Pio staff writers and editors) will be featured on J.C. Hutchins’s Web site, and the best review will receive a free copy of the book!

Some things people have been saying about “7th Son: Descent”:

“Hutchins’s debut SF thriller, the first in a trilogy, has the unusual distinction of starting life as a popular podcast. The fast pace set from the beginning serves the story well in audio or print, especially considering that most of the characters are clones of the same man. They’re sent to find their “Alpha” after he rigs a proxy assassination of the president of the United States through stolen government technology capable of unleashing chaos everywhere. Hutchins successfully fleshes out each clone as a separate personality, from happy everyman John Smith to the priest who fears that, as a clone, he has no soul. Though there’s not a lot for the hard SF crowd, thriller readers seeking edge-of-your-seat action flavored with conspiracy and futuristic tech will love every page. ” – Publisher’s Weekly

“J. C. Hutchins takes the science thriller and pumps it full of rocket fuel in 7th Son: Descent. It has weird science, convoluted conspiracies, plenty of action, and a very creepy premise that will leave you paranoid and shaken.” – Jonathan Maberry, multiple Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Dragon Factory and Patient Zero

“Hutchins’s high-tech nightmares leap off the page and lodge in your brain like a literary headshot. Brilliant.” – Scott Sigler, New York Times Bestselling Author of “Contagious”

So, what are you waiting for? You have roughly one week to send me your submissions at blairhanleyfrank@gmail.com.

In a development that has sent shock waves through the entire Internet, Miley Cyrus, star of Hannah Montana, and daughter of Billy Ray, has ceased using Twitter. The outcry has been so severe, she has even earned her own hashtag, #mileycomeback. For those of you who don’t know, a hashtag is something Twitterers use to reference a certain event or person, who in this case, is Ms. Cyrus.

Billy Ray, for better or worse, is vehemently opposed to this idea, saying “Miley. You are a light in a world of darkness. You were born”Destiny Hope Cyrus” for a reason. You can’t leave everyone now.We r countin on u”.

According to multiple sources, Cyrus’ last tweet was: “FYI Liam doesn’t have a twttr & he wants ME 2 delete mine w/ gd reason,” a reference to Liam Hemsworth, her co-star for the upcoming film “The Last Song.”

As I noted in my column on Twitter, Twitter isn’t for everyone. Is it so hard for people to realize that Miley has discovered Twitter isn’t her thing? Apparently it is. The story has been picked up by the Associated Press, the Wall Street Journal, and the Guardian, just to name a few major media outlets. That’s amazing.

Why are people so incensed? From a quick overview of her Twitter page in Google’s cache, I can see why people are missing her so much. After all, who wouldn’t miss such pearls of wisdom as: “Me: Noah, will you get me 2 popsicles? Her: How big of a pig are you? Do you want me to get the whole fridge?!?! So much for Nurse Noah ha,” or “I don’t know who I love more…. Prince Eric or John Smith. Ughh these Disney movies are so romantic.”

Personally, I know I wish Ms. Cyrus the best in her Twitter-less endeavors, if for no other reason than to raise the overall good grammar to bad grammar quotient on Twitter.

Do video games lead to violence? I don’t think so, but owning a samurai sword certainly might:

Detectives are still interviewing a Johns Hopkins University student who fatally lacerated the upper body of a man breaking into his off-campus residence overnight. The suspect also suffered a nearly-severed hand, and was pronounced dead at the scene….when one of the students heard noises at about 1am, he went to downstairs to investigate armed with the sword. He saw that the side door to their garage had been pried open, and inside, the suspect lunged at him.

Holy cow. That’s one way to defend your stuff. The slice-and-dice took place after the house had been burglarized earlier that same day, and the bandits made off with two computers and a Sony PlayStation 3. The moral of this story? Don’t attack a man carrying a samurai sword.

Listen to the people cry! A certain G. Frew admits, “today I needed to turn in a paper and there were no staplers to be found in olin or maxey. so I snuck into the office of a professor I don’t know when he left for the bathroom, and used his stapler. this situation is in desperate need of repair.”

Have you no shame, Sir Cadiz-Peck? Look at our teeming masses, resorting to petty crimes to get by! How can you blame US, in dire need of essential resources, and support the system that has pushed us to this ledge?

Money is tight, but WE, who all contribute to this system of rule, will not be denied that which binds us: staples.
